POP INTO MORE COLORS
Commissioned by the MTR Rail Company, we transformed the light-flooded atrium of Hong Kong’s Popcorn Mall – a popular meeting point for Hongkongers – into an immersive art installation. As artists, we were involved in the conceptual and artistic phase from the beginning. Unlike a conventional flat surface, we designed our “canvas” as a sculptural, folded wall structure that rose and fell dramatically through the space. Its angular, origami-like folds created the backbone of the installation, as well as dynamic sightlines, inviting visitors to move around and experience shifting perspectives. Titled "Pop Into More Colors", the installation encouraged playful interaction: visitors were drawn to explore, discover hidden perspectives, and immerse themselves in the vibrant dialogue between color, form, and space.
The first piece, "The Taped Staircase", uses precise anamorphic techniques to create the illusion of a three-dimensional staircase. When viewed from a specific angle, the flat surfaces appear to rise, enticing visitors to step into the illusion and capture striking photographs.
The second installation, "Flying Tapes", surrounds visitors with floating lines and shifting patterns that respond to their presence, transforming the space into a playful, ever-changing visual experience.
Finally, "Into the Chromosphere" envelops viewers in a vivid field of honeycomb-like tape patterns. Walls and floors merge into a single, dreamlike surface of color, distorting spatial perception and drawing visitors deeper into the artwork.
